Meet the Douglas Fir: Nature's Gift to Your Festive Season

Though we experiment with growing a number of potted Christmas Tree alternatives, we concentrate on cultivating the magnificent Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). This remarkable tree has its roots in the US West Coast and was originally celebrated for its prized timber, earning nods of approval from builders and architects alike.

As a Christmas tree superstar, the Douglas Fir began appearing in the 1920s.  It continues to be a preferred choice in the United States and Canada, and it’s popularity increases in Australia, the UK and Europe.

The growth potential of a Douglas Fir is truly impressive: Picture a 100-meter sprint, and then imagine a tree reaching this towering height. The tallest living Douglas Fir in the world, is a majestic giant reigning in Oregon, USA, and as of 2021, measured a staggering 99.06 meters. These trees can sprout 30-60cm annually, and can live for more than 1000 years!

The Douglas fir has a classy symmetrical shape and the dark green to blue-green needles are incredibly soft to the touch. The Tree has a sweet delicate pine-like, mild citrus scent.
